Even though Ralph Macchio had the lead role - I didn't think he was all that great. This movie belonged to William Zabka. He played his role with a passion that made him so believable in the role of Johnny. It's a shame he hasn't gone on to bigger roles as he is such a good actor.
Even though Elisabeth Shue had a minor role, I thought she was very good, although I didn't believe Ali and Daniel as a couple as there was no chemistry between them - I thought she was better suited to Johnny- any way it is good to see Elisabeth get out of the typecast roles of the girlfriend ( Back to the Future 2 & 3, Cocktail etc etc.
Up until two years ago when it was on television, the last time I saw this movie was when I was 12 years old. When watching it after a 8 year gap, the one thing that surprised me was that The Karate Kid has not aged. It is still as good today as it was 15 years ago and it is one movie that should not be missed.

This is not even a full movie. I'm depressed. As much as I agree that Daniel is definitely more of an instigator than he lets on (or honestly, I think he himself even realizes) and that much of Johnny's bad attitude can be justified to a degree with some context, there are SOME things here that make Johnny look a little too good and Daniel a little too responsible for what actually happened. The REAL bully is John Kreese. By the time Daniel officially involves Miyagi, Daniel is done with the conflict, he simply wants to stop getting beaten up and he's worried (perhaps wrongfully) that he will continue to be in danger unless he can get someone to officially squash the feud. Daniel comes to the Kobra Kai dojo with the intention of declaring non-hostility, but its John Kreese, not Johnny, that not only refuses but actually fuels the negative traits of his students and encourages violence against not only Daniel but Miyagi too, who is a grown man. Miyagi sees Kreese is a far bigger problem than Johnny, and he also feels his honor is being challenged (You don't do that with old school Japanese dudes) so he set's Daniel onto a path of more conflict. Up until that point both Daniel and Johnny share responsibility for the escalating conflict because of a lack of understanding of each other's perspectives. Daniel makes the first move on Ali as he's new in town and doesn't have any friends, but does not realize Ali is already in a fight with a current boyfriend, Johnny, whom unbeknownst to Daniel has been with Ali in a somewhat serious relationship for 2 years (which is an eternity in High School years. On the beach, Johnny just wants to talk but then gets unreasonably aggressive when Ali doesn't... this aggression triggers Daniel's hotheaded Jersey chivalry and then Daniel becomes the aggressor and winds up paying for it. However. though its easy to point out Daniel's flaws and contributions to the escalation (like the Soccer incident being entirely his fault, or the halloween party) don't forget that Johnny officially lost his cool after being doused with water. Johnny and friends succesfully run Daniel down and give him a good kicking, but Johnny is so pissed and angry that even his friends start to pull him away in an attempt to stop him from causing serious damage. the beating goes beyond what is responible very quickly, and the situation honestly becomes dangerous as Daniel can no longer stand and Johnny continues to wail on him, which is ultimately when Miyagi steps in to save the boy a serious hospital visit. Yes, Daniel is much more responsible for the situation than he lets one or realizes, but up to the point where Miyagi and Kreese meet, the escalation is at both boy's fault.
